For scratching surfaces, sisal rope is ideal, but you can also use remnant carpet (loop pile only if it won’t snag) or durable fabric from thrift stores.

Build for stability first

Keep it cheap by keeping it simple: one heavy base, one main “trunk,” and two to four platforms. Place the finished tower near a window or the room where your cat already relaxes. If your cat ignores it at first, sprinkle a pinch of catnip on the scratching section and place a favorite treat on a mid-level perch.
